  • Remembrance Day in Bankhead

Today I took Dima to see Banff’s ghost town: Bankhead. Through some odd coincidence, we arrived just as a Remembrance Day ceremony was starting at a nearby monument to the residents of Bankhead who lost their lives in war.

It made for a surreal experience, walking through the foundations of old buildings, in the middle of the woods, with a bugle sounding through the trees.

  • Things Made Simple

Tyler Klein’s blog Things Made Simple documents Tyler’s work in creating a eurorack module based on Yahama’s YM3812 FM synthesis chip, which was a mainstay of computer soundcards in the 1990’s. Tyler also has a YouTube channel which follows his work.

Moritz Klein’s YouTube channel is a great source for explanations of how analog synthesizer circuits work, along with schematics and breadboard examples of the circuits in action.

  • Clock

    Status: Built

A clock and clock divider, built around an Arduino Nano. The settings are controlled by a rotary encoder and are displayed on a three digit seven segment display, controlled by a MAX7219 display driver chip. The clock has inputs for an external clock and to reset the clock divider which are both buffered through a MCP6002 op amp chip.

  • Elizabeth Oldfield, Soul Work for the End of the World

The reconcilably bittersweet nature of adulthood was suddenly too much. I am purportedly a grown-up, but I don’t know the answers. I feel bone-weary from carrying around heavy things. I hate that monsters exist, and that they often win, and that some of them live in me.

  • Shift Register Sequencer

    Status: Built

My shift register sequencer is a clone of Music Thing Modular’s Turing Machine. It plays random sequences based on shifting binary values, but can be looped once you find one that you want to stick with.

  • Infill Housing Analysis Idea

Multi-unit infill housing is becoming very popular for developers in Calgary, but are the prices of the new individual units more or less affordable than the former residence which was bulldozed?

Idea: Analyze the pre-teardown sale price and post-construction sales prices to determine if infill housing is driving inflation of prices at a housing-unit level.
