Sean Carney is a data science leader working where emerging technology meets governance and strategy. An accountant by training and a data scientist by practise, he has spent nearly two decades working in insurance, retail, and banking. Today he is the Director of Data Science at ATB Financial, where his team provides insights grounded in data to support the internal audit departments work. He has led internal audit’s adoption of generative AI and brings a systems-thinking approach to helping ATB use AI with confidence while keeping its risks in view.

Outside the office, Sean likes to make things. He designs and builds his own modular synthesizer modules, from circuit boards to firmware, and documents them at synth.seancarney.ca. He dabbles in photography and letterpress printmaking, and lately he’s been bringing the two together, working out how to reproduce photographs on a letterpress. He also runs Oscillating Octopus, a node on the local Meshtastic network, which carries text messages by radio without cell service or internet. When he isn’t at the workbench or press, he’s running or exploring the Rocky Mountains near his home in Calgary, Alberta.

Contact
