Alive In Joburg (District 9)
Sun, 11/29/2009 - 19:21 — Sean CarneyWay back in 2005, you might remember that I had an area on this website entitled 'seanTV'. On it I posted a number of videos I found interesting or entertaining before YouTube was around to fill the same role. One of those videos was Alive in Joburg, a short little parody of South African apartheid where the filmmakers swapped some aliens for the non-whites.
Two weeks ago I discovered this short film had been adapted to a feature length film entitled District 9. Disregarding my feeling like I had been living under a rock for not knowing this, I quickly set out to view the full length movie. In short, I have to say that District 9 is an awesome movie.
First I need to admit I have a soft spot for South African cinema since I've been in the areas the movie was filmed in and even ridden in those massive police vehicles. Other than my obscure emotional attachments, District 9 is a great movie since it breaks some new ground. In nearly all movies there are two stereotypes of aliens, they are advanced to the point where they are never suffering (except in battle), and they are the oppressors of the humans. District 9 is great since it humanizes the aliens by showing them suffering, but it also demonizes the humans by showing how we oppress them.
If you are interested in District 9 but aren't sure if you should see it, I recommend watching the Alive in Joburg short. The movie is different in a number of ways from the short, but the style and core message is the same.

The Tweed Ride is Coming to Winnipeg
Sat, 11/28/2009 - 00:41 — Sean CarneyI was extremely happy to read the Winnipeg Tweed Ride website and learn that they are attempting to start a tweed ride in Winnipeg.
What is a tweed ride? you ask. Well the tweed ride is simply an organized bicycle ride around town with everyone decked out in tweed. It has a British lower class feel about it and could be described as a critical mass ride, but with style.
I'm very excited to be able participate in this.

9/11 Pager Intercepts Posted
Wed, 11/25/2009 - 18:34 — Sean CarneyIn an interesting posting, wikileaks (the custodians of information other people don't want you to know) have began posting all the pages that were sent in New York on September 11th 2001.
This list is incredibly interesting, you see people asking loved ones if they are okay, people spreading the news, and computer equipment reporting systems and networks going down. The list is also a little creepy since most of the people probably didn't expect their messages to be posted online eight years down the road.
Here are a few of the messages that were sent:
The very first message was from a computer system on the floor that was hit:

Then the personal messages followed:

The Photography of Rune Guneriussen
Mon, 11/23/2009 - 18:49 — Sean CarneyA while back I stumbled across the photography of Rune Guneriussen, bookmarked it, and promptly forgot about it for the better part of a year. Recently when cleaning out my bookmarks I found it again and am simply astounded by all the pictures.
I guess part of the reason I am attracted to these pictures is that I enjoy night photography. Whenever I look at them I can't help but try to figure out how they were taken. Generally taking the pictures like these is easy, but I just cannot imagine the logistics behind getting all these lamps into the forest and supplying power to them.
A while back Mikael and I had an idea very similar to this where we would take a sofa, television, side table and lamp around the province and photograph them in various random places. I liked the idea of a living room set up in the forest, a normal, typical home but completely out of context. These pictures make me want to revisit that project although how to cart everything around and supply power to it still eludes me.

Arduino Ideas
Wed, 11/18/2009 - 20:27 — Sean CarneyLately I've been giving some thought as to what micro-controller tinkering I should do next.
The first thing I need to do is to finish what I have started and complete the 'weather clock' project. I tracked down an old mantle clock which I might purchase tonight, so all I need to do is get some servos and print the new clock face. Hopefully I can complete this by Christmas.
I have also been playing around with the idea of a GPS enabled hat with an Arduino doing all the processing work. The various ideas I have had are;
- A hat that notifies the wearer when they are close to certain drinking establishments
- A hat that uses multiple vibrating motors to always indicate true north
- A hat that will guide the user to a disclosed (or undisclosed) destination by merely providing the direction to travel in
- Some combination of the above
I also thought that the hat could be used for some form of perverse orienteering competition. Individuals could be timed on how long they took to complete a set course of unknown checkpoints using only the hat for guidance. The hat could also lead someone to a party or another secret event.
This will take a while to implement since the hardware required is rather costly, but I think it will be a really cool project once it is completed.

Mikael Vincent Tien Doe Haughland Chan (September 11 1984 - November 10 2009)
Tue, 11/10/2009 - 22:16 — Sean CarneyThis morning I learned that my best friend, Mikael Chan, took his own life last night. Mikael and I had been friends since high school and he was the best man at my wedding. Mikael was a close and loyal friend. He was incredibly creative and was known to always have a number of projects on the go.
Over the past 14 months Mikael struggled with some mental health issues and last night he decided to put an end to it all. I am profoundly sad that he is gone, but I hope he got the peace he sought.
It is hard not to think that I could have done something differently in the past day which would have saved him. I guess the fact is that I (and no one else for that fact) can watch over someone all the time, even if that is what they need the most.
Below is his last blog entry, made last evening. You can click to read it, but only if you want to.

The Last Email I Recieved from Mikael
Mon, 11/09/2009 - 23:20 — Sean CarneyTo: Sean Carney
From: Mikael Chan
Date: Mon, Nov 9, 2009 at 11:20 PM
Subject: Goodbye
Hi Sean,
how are you? I am not doing so well. In fact, I've just taken two months worth of meds. I just want to tell you how much you mean to me Sean. I love you dearly, as a brother. If this works, I'm truly sorry for the pain you will feel. That's not the purpose of what I'm doing. There arejust some insurmountable obstacles in my life that I can't figure out what to do with - other than what i've done. I know that I am betraying you. I'm so sorry. I just can't see any other way out. Your friendship has meant more to me over the past nine years than I can express. You ware a wonderful friend, and I am dearly sorry for what I'm putting you through. Please remember me as the way you have always seen me, and not as the desperate (someting) that I am tonight. Heather can fill you in on wat I mean b tat.
Anyaws,
I'm losin consciousness, and sho9uld go. Please, next time, if there isa next tie, answer the pone.
Always yiours,
Mikael

Happy Birthday Emily
Fri, 11/06/2009 - 19:10 — Sean CarneyTuesday was Emily's twenty-first birthday. We spent the evening at her family's house eating pizza, scrap-booking, and eventually eating cake. It was fun to spend time with family but without a really strict agenda and without many distractions. Time is one of the best gifts you can ever give someone.

Beating Their Plowshares Into Swords
Tue, 11/03/2009 - 17:47 — Sean Carney
In a not entirely unexpected move, the US has commissioned a new warship named the USS New York and built with steel from the World Trade Centre.
Apparently the ships motto is "Never forget", but I'm wondering if "Never forgive" would be more appropriate.
