Pointless Legislation
Fri, 03/06/2009 - 15:36 — Sean CarneyLegislators in Illinois appear to be burning the midnight oil as they find stranger and strange things to legislate. Recently the government of Illinois has passed a bill changing the status of Pluto back to a planet.
Now besides the fact that there are probably more pressing issues they should be devoting their time to, isn't a bit ridiculous that they had attempted use legislation to change science. It is as if Canada suddenly legislated that Pi is only 3.14 and dropped the other digits. This hurts knowledge and research by breaking globally accepted principles into local understandings.
The funniest aspect in my mind is now elementary school textbooks will have to read as follows:
A planet is a large object such as Earth or Jupiter that orbits a star. It is smaller than a star, and it does not make light. Planets are ball-shaped (spheres). There are eight planets in our solar system, or nine if you live in Chicago...

Wow. Just goes to show you
Wow. Just goes to show you that people who don't know about a topic shouldn't make laws (or bills) on the topic. However, one could also see that other sentient life in the universe, if such a thing exists, would have different ideas about how everything works. Food for thought in case of alien invasion...
